Tsunami Warning: Threat to Auckland
      
Aucklanders advised to stay away from both east and west coasts following tsunami warning

The tsunami warning remains in place. 

People are still being warned to stay away from the beaches and not go out in their boats today.  There is still a likelihood of strong currents in coastal areas and a danger of tidal surges for the next 12 hours. 

“While the beaches might appear safe, there is still a risk of surges which would catch out anyone on the beach or in a boat.  As a result, we are continuing to advise people to cancel all water-based activities, including boating, fishing or visiting the beach, until further notice,” says Auckland Region Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Controller Harry O’Rourke.

People need to:
• Turn on their radios and listen to the advice from Civil Defence

People in coastal areas should:

1. Stay off beaches
2. Do not go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
6. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities

If told to evacuate people should respond promptly. Where possible, take a radio and cell phone with them and check for updates.
