The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group have been advised that there is little further tsunami risk to the Auckland region from the 8.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Vanuatu today at 1103 NZDT.

However, there is still a risk of waves having the potential to create tidal surges and strong currents.

Therefore, as a precaution, the Auckland Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is continuing to monitor the situation and advise people to:

  • Stay away from beach / estuary / marina and harbour areas until Friday 9 October as the threat of strong currents remains

The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Controller, Harry O’Rourke thanks the media for their continuing participation in this event.

“Today was a timely reminder about the very real need that an emergency can happen at any time and everyone must get ready to get through,” he said.

“It was good too, to see how the media played their important role in getting key messages out to the community. Today has shown that the Group Emergency Operation’s systems and people are ready and able to meet the challenges an emergency brings.”
