Disaster Awareness Week: Sunday 11 - Saturday 17 October 2009
In 2001, the United Nations decided to observe 'International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction' on the second Wednesday of October, as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
Within New Zealand the Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management dedicated a week to include the second Wednesday of October, this year Disaster Awareness Week is Sunday 11 - Saturday 17 October 2009.

LIFEWISE, with the support of lots of organisations across Tamaki Makaurau, is taking the lead and encouraging all Aucklanders to mark a day on their calendar to knock on doors or lean over the fence and get to know their neighbours better. Saturday, 17th of October will be Auckland’s first official Neighbours Day, a celebration of neighbourliness and what LIFEWISE hopes will herald the creation of more supportive, healthy and connected neighbourhoods across Auckland.

What's happening in Rodney?On Saturday 10 October Warkworth will host the annual Kowhai Festival. The Rodney District Council will be there so look out for them. The Mahurangi East Community Emergency Response Teams will be providing helpful advice and promotional give-aways outside Warehouse Snells beach and New World Warkworth.

What's going on in Manukau?
Ambury Farm Day will be held on October 11 from 10am - 4pm. Ambury Farm day attracts thousands of children and their parents from all over the city. The theme for the day is "bringing town to country." The park team puts on a full day of rural-style entertainment including:
- pony rides
- face painting
- sheep shearing
- dog team display
- pet animals
